Privacy Policy

Last updated: March 2025

StudyCheetah ("we", "our", or "us") is an exam preparation platform. This policy describes what data we collect, how we use it, and how we protect it. We do not sell your personal data to third parties.

1. Data we collect and store

We collect and store only what is needed to provide and improve our service.

  • Account information: Email address, name, and (if you sign up with email) a hashed password. If you sign in with Google or Apple, we receive your email and name from the provider and may store a profile picture URL. We store whether your email is verified and, when applicable, temporary verification codes used only for account verification.
  • Subscription and billing: Subscription tier (e.g. free or unlimited), status, and—when you subscribe—Stripe customer and subscription identifiers and current period end. We do not store your full payment card details; Stripe handles payment data.
  • Preferences and usage: In-app preferences (e.g. notifications, daily reminders, theme, study goals) and optional onboarding answers (e.g. how you heard about us, language, student type). We store study streak data (e.g. current and longest streak, last study date) to show your progress.
  • Courses and study kits: Course names, descriptions, exam dates, and study kit names and configurations. We store which materials (documents or links) you add to each study kit and the status of generated tools (e.g. notes, flashcards, quizzes).
  • Documents and content: When you upload files (e.g. PDFs, documents, images), we store the file in secure cloud storage (AWS S3), along with metadata such as filename, file type, size, and processing status. We may store extracted text and, for audio or video, transcriptions, so we can generate study materials. We also store the study content we generate from your materials (notes, flashcards, quizzes, mock exams, etc.) in our databases.
  • Chat and support: If you use in-app chat (e.g. within a study kit), we store conversation threads so we can provide context-aware help.

2. How we use your data

We use your data to:

  • Provide the StudyCheetah service (courses, study kits, generated content, and features like the study timer and streaks).
  • Process your materials with AI to generate notes, flashcards, quizzes, and related content.
  • Send you transactional emails (e.g. verification, welcome, password reset) and, if you have opted in, product or reminder emails.
  • Process payments and manage your subscription via Stripe.
  • Understand how the product is used (e.g. via optional product analytics) so we can improve the service.

We do not sell your personal data to third parties. We do not use your content or data for advertising targeting or for training third-party AI models beyond what is needed to power your study tools.

3. Third-party services

We use a limited set of trusted providers to run the service. Each processes data only as needed for the function they provide:

  • Resend — Sending transactional and optional marketing emails.
  • Stripe — Payment processing and subscription management. Stripe's own privacy policy applies to payment data.
  • AWS (Amazon Web Services) — Hosting and file storage (e.g. uploaded documents and related assets).
  • OpenAI — Processing your materials and generating study content. Content is sent to OpenAI only to produce your notes, flashcards, quizzes, and similar outputs.
  • PostHog — Optional product analytics (e.g. feature usage, funnels). When enabled, we may use a EU-hosted instance. You can control cookie and analytics behavior via your browser or our cookie preferences where offered.

These providers are bound by their own privacy and data processing terms. We choose them with data protection and security in mind.

4. Cookies and similar technologies

We use cookies and similar technologies for essential functions such as keeping you logged in (session and authentication). We do not use third-party advertising cookies. If we use optional analytics (e.g. PostHog), we do so to improve the product, not to track you across the web for ads.

5. Data retention and deletion

We retain your data for as long as your account is active and as needed to provide the service and comply with legal obligations. If you want to delete your account and associated data (courses, documents, generated content), contact us at the address below. We will process the request in line with applicable law and our retention requirements (e.g. for billing or legal purposes).

6. Security

We use industry-standard measures to protect your data, including encryption in transit (HTTPS) and at rest where applicable, secure authentication, and access controls. Passwords are hashed and never stored in plain text. We restrict access to personal data to those who need it to operate and support the service.

7. Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:

  • Access — Request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
  • Export — You can export your account and study data (e.g. profile, courses, documents metadata, generated content) from the app or via our export feature where available.
  • Correction — Update your account details (e.g. name, email, preferences) in settings.
  • Deletion — Request deletion of your account and associated data by contacting us.
  • Opt-out of marketing — Unsubscribe from non-essential emails via the link in those emails or via your account preferences.

To exercise these rights or ask questions about your data, contact us using the details below. We will respond within a reasonable time and in line with applicable law.

8. International transfers

Our infrastructure and some of our providers may be located outside your country. Where we transfer personal data internationally, we rely on appropriate safeguards (such as standard contractual clauses or adequacy decisions) as required by applicable law.

9. Children

StudyCheetah is not directed at children under 16. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 16. If you believe we have collected such data, please contact us so we can delete it.

10. Changes to this policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. We will post the updated version on this page and, for material changes, we may notify you by email or through the app. The "Last updated" date at the top indicates when the policy was last revised.
